Mónica Vermes

Mónica Vermes is a musicologist dedicated mostly to the study of musical repertoires and practices in Rio de Janeiro’s Belle Époque. Her ongoing project is titled “Music in the Theatres of Rio de Janeiro: repertoires, reception and cultural practices (1890-1920)”, a project partially financed by CNPq (Brazilian National Council for the Development of Science and Research). She continues this project now as researcher of the Brazilian National Library (Biblioteca Nacional – RJ, 2016-2017).

Vermes is professor at the Federal University of Espírito Santo (Universidade Federal do Espírito Santo), Brazil, where she participates in the activities of the Department of Art Theory and Music and in both the Graduate Program in Literary Studies and the Graduate Program in Communication and Territorialities.

She coordinates the Literary and Musicological Studies Group (NELM – Núcleo de Estudos Literários e Musicológicos), and she is a researcher in LABELLE – Research Group on Literature and Culture of the Belle Époque (UERJ), in the Research Group on History and Music (UNESP), and in NOMOS – Social Musicology Center at the Arts Institute of Unesp (IA-Unesp).

Vermes completed her doctorate in 2003 at the Pontifical Catholic University of São Paulo (PUC-SP) with the thesis “Criticism and Creation: a study of Schumann’s Kreisleriana, Op 16″, later published as a book. In 2004-2005 Vermes held a postdoctoral internship at the Music Department of the University of São Paulo (USP), during which she devoted herself to research on music in Rio de Janeiro in the late nineteenth and early twentieth century, a topic that has been the main axis of her research activity. She recently concluded a postdoctoral internship at the Arts Institute of the State University of Sao Paulo (UNESP). She regularly participates in academic conferences in Brazil and abroad.
